چکیده
Health Reports, Vol. 15, No. 4, July 2004 Statistics Canada, Catalogue 82-003 In 2002, about 3 million Canadians aged 15 or older, or 12.2%, admitted having used cannabis—that is, marijuana or hashish—at least once in the previous 12 months. This estimate, based on data from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), represents a significant increase in self-reported drug use over the last decade. In 1989, 6.5% of Canadians reported using cannabis; by 1994, the figure had risen to 7.4%.1,2 This rise in drug use mirrors another recent study, which showed increased cannabis use among Ontario high school students over the same period.3 It may also partly reflect changing attitudes about drug use.

A twin study of early cannabis use and subsequent use and abuse/dependence of other illicit drugs.
INTRODUCTION Cannabis use is strongly associated with the use and abuse/dependence of other illicit drugs. Gateway and common liabilities models have been employed to explain this relationship. We sought to examine this association using a combination of the discordant twin design and modeling methods. METHOD We assess the relationship between early cannabis use and the subsequent use and abu...
متن کاملCannabis and other illicit drugs: comorbid use and abuse/dependence in males and females.
Cannabis and other illicit drugs are often used or abused comorbidly. Two competing theories to explain this comorbidity are (i) the phenotypic causation (gateway) model and (ii) the correlated liabilities model. We used data from 1191 male and 934 female same-sex twin pairs to test 13 genetically informative models of comorbidity. Models were fit separately for use and abuse/dependence in both...

متن کاملSocioeconomic status and substance use among Swiss young men: a population-based cross-sectional study
BACKGROUND Socioeconomic status (SES) is often inversely related to health outcomes and is likely to play a role in the use of psychoactive substances among young individuals, although little consensus exists on the association between SES and substance use. The purpose of the study was to determine the association of three SES indicators (perceived family income, education level of participant...
متن کاملAn Australian twin study of cannabis and other illicit drug use and misuse, and other psychopathology.
Cannabis is the most widely used illicit drug throughout the developed world and there is consistent evidence of heritable influences on multiple stages of cannabis involvement including initiation of use and abuse/dependence. In this paper, we describe the methodology and preliminary results of a large-scale interview study of 3,824 young adult twins (born 1972-1979) and their siblings. Cannab...
متن کاملIllicit drug use, peer attitudes, and perceptions of harmful effects among convicted cannabis offenders.
A sample of criminalized cannabis users provided information about their use of other illicit drugs and friends' attitudes toward various substances. The majority of those surveyed were regular, heavy users of cannabis, had friends who were similarly involved, and were more experienced with a variety of other illicit drugs than youthful groups from the larger population. In its perception of ha...
